WINEMAKING NOTES

Smithbrook is a boutique vineyard and winery located in Western Australia’s picturesque Pemberton, a three-hour drive south of Perth and 90 minutes south of Margaret River. In recent years, Pemberton has gained increased prominence and recognition due to its evolution as an exceptional cool-climate grape-growing area.  The growing season leading up to the 2019 Vintage was quite typical. Slightly
lower than average rainfall, however adequate to fill dams and the soil profile in readiness for the spring growth stage. Spring weather conditions were dry and mild, perfect for balanced vine canopies.  During the critical ripening stages, Pemberton once again had mild temperate days with cool nights.  Cooler conditions promote vibrant flavoured whites, and the reds were picked just in time before the onset of winter rains.  The fruit was hand-picked and sorted, then destemmed to an open fermenter, including 20% whole bunches for complexity and texture. Following a short cold soak, before ferment kicking off, the wine was tasted daily and plunged as required for 14 days then matured for eight months in new (25%) and one year-old French barriques.

FOOD PAIRING

A perfect match with duck, casseroles and stews like Beef Bourguignon! Also great with fish and pasta dishes.

TASTING NOTES

This aromatically charged Pinot leaps from the glass displaying dark cherry, wild strawberry with underlying earthy savoury notes. The technique of whole bunch fermentation adds a gamey, stalky, complexity to the aroma.  The palate is medium-weighted with bright, jubey red fruits. by a crisp zippy acid backbone, which promotes freshness.
